Hello,

My name is Gérard Meunier. I'm a rather old user of BlackBox, and very interested in a Linux version, since it's my OS now. Wine is a rather good solution, but far from perfect. Is there a decent native version of BB on Linux today? I tried this one:

https://svn.oberoncore.ru/community/old/BlackBox-Linux/

but couldn't make it work. My Linux version is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bits.

Regards.

Gérard

Thanks Borix and Eugene for your answers,

There is a lot to read and understand. It's very exciting, but a little frustrating, since I don't know Russian. There are automatic translators on Internet, fortunately, but their translations are somehow... automatic. Do you think that this situation could evolve?

I installed console linux on my Ubuntu computer with the deb installer. The installer worked fine, but when I tried and ran the console, I got:

gerard@Hermes:~$ BlackBox
failed to install signal
32
failed to install signal
33

****
* Error 01
* Init: code file not found
****

I read viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4118, but I don't think they give a solution. Am I missing something?

I'm a Linux user, and, even if I programmed a lot under BB, I'm not a Linux programmer. Nevertheless, I'd like to help this project. What can I do?

Gérard

No.

It seems to me that you can found the explanation in Dev/Docu/ElfLinker-Link & Lin/Docu/P-S-I (http://oberoncore.ru/_media/projects/bb16lin-console.7z --- now these docs in source archive only).

High-quality translation requires a lot of time even for professionals. As for me, I have no nor qualification nor time at the current moment. The Translab helps us with consultations & sometimes with translations, but we can't request help in such size. So, I think what the volunteers which is able to translate from Russian to English can evolve it...

Is anyone here who can help?

Gérard,
according to my day-to-day experience in using Google Translator for French documentation last year, I recommend you to prefer translation of Russian->English over Russian->French due to weak Russian-French translation. So I personally prefer to translate by Google Translator from French to English. In this way I don't loose too much meaning of connection between words.

Worst of that, in addition to machine translation issues, Russian-speaking people use a lot of jargon, both in day-to-day activity in internet especially in IT domain. For example, Russian jargon-word "хэндлить" (spoken as "handlit`") is taken from English word "to handle". "Затюнить" - from word English "tune" Unfortunately, there are lot of examples in same manner.

One of possible (probably inexisting) solutions for machine translation from Russian is pre-translation phase, targeted for "normalization" of text before machine translation.

Thanks for this information, Roman. May be you also know someone who can help us to translate?

Thanks for your advice, Roman. It's somewhat logic that Google translates best to English. For the jargon, as I can read cyrillic (but not understand it), I'll try to hear the English technical words inside.
